Desert Fire Over Red Cathedral

The Story

Standing at Zabriskie Point during my first visit to Death Valley in 2018, I was blown away. I had never seen anything like these badlands. I met a hiker who pointed up at the route he planned to tackle, Red Cathedral. I was out of breath just imagining it. Between the steep drop offs and towering scree fields, it’s an unforgiving landscape where people have died, for example trying to summit the nearby Manly Beacon. I finally returned in 2025 to hike that exact route, determined to view the badlands from the highest point in the area. I spent a lot of time at the high point taking panoramas, and honestly just living in the moment, freely. After all that planning, this specific shot ended up being completely spontaneous! Trekking back to the car, I couldn't stop looking over my shoulder in awe of the landscape. All of a sudden, the perfect framing presented itself. Relying on the Z9's IBIS, I quickly took this handheld shot as the sky caught fire over the rugged terrain.
