April 23, 2026 — Despite its close proximity to Los Angeles and relatively moderate difficulty, I only encountered a handful of people on the trail. Standing as the highest point in the San Gabriels front range, the various skylines of Los Angeles are prominent and obvious, and you can easily see all the way out to the Pacific Ocean. As the last hike of my Angeles National Forest trip, I spent an eternity at the summit taking in these endless views. The trailhead is located right off Angeles Crest Highway in a parking area. The first 2.5 miles of the trail are very mellow and gentle, very trail-runner friendly if that is your thing. At Lawlor Saddle (34.27466719076574, -118.11198110616574), you will take the spur trail on your left for Strawberry Peak. From here, the trail undulates gently along the ridgeline as it works its way up to the peak. The spur trail is mostly easy class 1, at times encountering mild scrambling, especially just before you hit the true summit.
